Panga Watch is collaborating with Global Fishing Watch to conduct a two-part mission: (1) determine the preferred attributes necessary to implement a vessel tracking program; (2) recommend the appropriate technology and set of incentives for program adoption in small-scale fisheries (SSF) based on said characteristics. This will be accomplished through three objectives.
This information will be used by Global Fishing Watch to implement tracking programs in SSF around the world.
Launched in September 2016, Global Fishing Watch is the provider of the world’s first global view of commercial fishing activities. GFW tracks global fishing activity through two different and complementary vessel tracking systems: Automatic identification system (AIS) and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS). Their tracking technology, however, has not extended to small scale fisheries.
